Enfield: Mills & Farming Town to Malls & Industrial Parks

In the past century, Enfield has undergone a transformation from a rural mill and farming town of twelve thousand to a substantial suburban community of forty-two thousand. Enfield Historical Society member Jim Malley will discuss the carpet and powder mill history and give an overview of tobacco, dairy, potato, and poultry farms. Malley will show how Enfield began to change when the carpet industry moved parts of its operation south in the 1950s, and construction of Interstate 91 was completed, bringing shopping malls and industrial parks along Elm Street and Hazard Avenue.
