Thompsonville’s Strand Theatre and Enfield’s Other Movie Theaters

May 25, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

While many people fondly remember Thompsonville’s Strand Theatre (later the Enfield Cinema) on North Main Street, it was not the only movie theater in Thompsonville.  Nor was it the first.  Decades earlier in the silent movie era, the Scenic Theatre held that honor.  Then there were the Orpheum, the Franklin, and the Majestic.  All before the Strand opened and became arguably the grandest of them all.

These theaters and Enfield’s more recent venues (remember Cine Enfield 8 on Hazard Avenue?) are the subject of the newest exhibit at the Enfield Historical Society’s Old Town Hall Museum.  Artifacts from the Strand, including one of the theater’s projectors, are the centerpiece of the exhibit.

Using photographs and artifacts, Michael Miller will share the fascinating and complicated stories of the theaters, from opening to demolition.  And, he will give you a preview of the new theaters exhibit at the Old Town Hall.

Please bring your own stories of going to the movies in Enfield to share at this program!

This presentation is open to the public.  Anyone with an interest in Enfield history is welcome to attend.

The Enfield Historical Society is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that has preserved and shared Enfield’s history for more than 60 years.  New members are always needed and greatly appreciated.  Everyone is welcome.  You don’t need to be a historian or Enfield native to join.  Become a member today!
