The British (and Germans) Are Coming! The “Convention Army” in Enfield, 1778
After the Battle of Saratoga, Massachusetts suddenly had thousands of British and German prisoners of war they desperately wanted to get rid of–and keep from rejoining the war. The solution? March them a thousand miles south to Charlottesville, of course! So began the strange march of the “Convention Army,” made up of British regulars, German mercenaries, and in some cases their wives and children, in the late fall and winter of 1778-79. This unusual procession wound its way to the sleepy farming village of Enfield, Connecticut, in November 1778.
Learn about the Convention troops, their journey, their eventual fate, and what they found here in Enfield.
